This most recent entry is a different beast altogether Berseria follows a band of monstrous outlaws on the run from the church, which gives the game a darker edge. I’d also recommend Tales of Berseria as a nice place to start with the series, as it’s quite affordable and available on both PlayStation 4 and PC. It’s far from the most interesting games in the series, but Tales of Vesperia makes for a solid entry point. Vesperia’s is one of the more basic battle systems, but I suspect that newcomers won’t mind. Each Tales games has some interpretation of what’s called the “Linear Motion Battle System” where your character runs around the battlefield using different artes that are mapped to specific directional and button inputs, mixing them together to rack up big combos.

The drawbacks are all common criticisms of the series – a story that drags on for longer than necessary and a lot of ridiculous fantasy jargon – so it’s a good taste to see if the series is for you.ĭespite being originally released on the Xbox 360 back in 2008, Vesperia’s colourful cel-shaded visuals hold up well. Protagonist Yuri is a bit older and wiser than is usual for the series (he’s in his early 20s) and endearing companions like the princess Estelle, eccentric researcher Rita and pipe-smoking dog Repede add a lot to the adventure. The story is quite conventional, but the cast are well-liked. Vesperia remains a popular pick in the series for a number of reasons. After receiving a “Definitive Edition” in 2019 it’s now available on the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC. In terms of availability, it’s hard to beat Tales of Vesperia.
